As a strong Democrat in those days, but otherwise thinking logically, I thought this just shows to what lengths the GOP would go to oppose the President. I didn’t think it was that big a deal then – and still don’t.
Some people claimed the President was “commercializing Christmas”. And he was in a way but I didn’t see that as a much of an argument. After all, how could you commercialize that day any more than it already was. . There were five Thursdays in November that year and the traditional date would fall on Nov 30, just leaving 20 shopping days before Christmas. We were in the midst of a great depression and any little thing that might help our economy was worth considering.
